Open Position: Oceanographic Technician

Horizon Marine, Inc. (HMI) is currently seeking applicants for the position of Oceanographic Technician in our Richmond, TX office. This is a full-time position particularly suited to those persons with hands-on oceanographic field experience. This position occasionally involves extended offshore stays aboard vessels of opportunity up to six weeks at a time and generally between 30 and 90 days per year at sea.

Core duties will include the shore-side maintenance and shipboard operation of our FAST Eddy Ocean Current Survey Systems and building our Far Horizon Drifting buoys. The Oceanographic Technician will be expected to work closely with our clients’ representatives, the Captain and crew of vessels employed, and our own EddyWatch Forecasters to provide timely and accurate oceanographic data and support for our clients.

Only candidates who are enthusiastic, physically fit, possess a can-do attitude, have good interpersonal skills, handle stress well, accept supervision, and are able to function in a team environment need apply. You must be able to recognize electrical hazards, physically handle moderately heavy equipment, operate shop machinery, drive a forklift, and be able to perform under occasionally adverse sea conditions. Safety is our #1 priority. Experience with the proper use of power and hand tools is required.

There is no educational pre-requisite for this position; however, a bachelor’s degree is desirable.

Prior sea-going experience and basic seamanship skills will be a definite advantage. Mechanical aptitude, electronic/electrical knowledge, and general computing/networking/programming skills are desirable assets which will be taken into consideration in lieu of shipboard experience. The ability to logically troubleshoot and work through processes is strongly desired.

Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license, pass a DOT Medical Examination, have a clean driving record, be able to procure a U.S. government issued passport and TWIC, successfully complete a background investigation, and submit to periodic/random drug screening.
